DePauw Libraries Resource Policy

Discovery

DePauw University uses WorldCat Discovery as our discovery (search) interface. A discovery service is an online tool that allows library systems to search across a wide range of content, including physical and online resources. They are used by libraries around the world to help users search for content in an accurate and efficient way. Learn more about DePauw's WorldCat Discovery here.

Digital Resources

The DePauw Libraries provide content to a number of digital resources including: e-book collections, subject specific databases, newspapers, media, our Institutional Repository, and Digital Library.

Browse some of our digital content on DePauw's A-Z Databases list.

Course Reserves

"Course Reserves" refers to any print and media materials that instructors request to be set aside for student use throughout a course's duration.

For more information about Course Reserves with the DePauw Libraries, visit this link.

Alternatives to Course Reserves:

  • Open Educational Resources
    • By selecting library-provided articles and no-cost open educational resources (OERs) like open textbooks and/or eTexts, many instructors find it easier than imagined to teach a course while incurring little to no additional material costs for students. The Libraries are often able to help find open resources that provide students with the relevant content they need.
    • DPU Librarians maintain extensive guides demonstrating how to find and integrate free and open access materials, including textbooks, into your courses: Open Educational Resources (OER)
For assistance with using open educational resources, contact Scholarly Communications Librarian, Victoria Peters.

  • Alternatives to Print Textbooks
    • Some course materials may already be digitized and available through DePauw Libraries' digitized collections in HathiTrust or available as an e-book through DPU Libraries catalog, Discovery. Licensing restrictions may limit simultaneous access to these materials.

Consider alternatives to traditional textbooks, such as clinical and practitioner e-books intended for professional readers that are generally more available in electronic format.

If the Libraries do not already own an e-book version of your course material, request a purchase. We may not be able to purchase the materials due to availability, licensing restrictions, costs, etc. but we will do our best.

  • Link Directly to Online Articles
    • Link to resources in our many online databases and research guides. You can easily link these resources to your course in Moodle.
  • Audio/Visual Materials
    • You can submit a request for A/V materials for a course you are teaching through the E-Reserves Request Form. For streaming, we will need dates of viewing for the course.
  • Limited Digitization
    • A digital copy of a print article, or one to two chapters of book, dependent upon the book’s length, can be digitized for teaching. Digitization of entire volumes may be possible, but will be limited to public domain works or out-of-print books that are not available commercially and cannot be acquired by DPU Libraries in digital form.

Due to increased demand, it may take up to two weeks to fulfill requests; requests for instructional needs will receive priority.
If you'd like to discuss other possible options, please email rowlending@depauw.edu

Resource Sharing

Interlibrary Loan is a service whereby a DePauw library patron can borrow books, DVDs, music, etc. and/or receive digital copies of materials that are owned by another library. This means that we work hard to get you what you need! ILL is free for DePauw students, faculty, and staff; the library incurs any fee associated with your request. Learn more about ILL here.

DePauw is a member of the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI). This library-to-library collaboration strives to enhance faculty teaching and student learning for academic success. Through the “Power of PALNI,” each school benefits from reducing the duplication of efforts and achieving more in quality, value, and support. Members of the DePauw community are able to request materials from PALNI schools, such as Butler, Earlham, and Wabash, through interlibrary loan. The PALNI shared catalog expedites patron-initiated ILL requests.
