Accessing News and Newspapers through DePauw Libraries: The New York Times

This guide provides information about DePauw University's subscription access to various news outlets and how to setup your account and what content is available to students, staff and faculty at DePauw.

Welcome to the New York Times online

DePauw University Libraries are pleased to announce access to the New York Times daily newspaper on your computer, smartphone or tablet. (Note: this will not work on Kindle readers, only Kindle Fire.)  Get the news each day along with other digital-only content via the web or the NYT app.  All you need is your @depauw.edu email address to register.

Using The New York Times Academic Site License

Step 1: Navigate to www.accessnyt.com

Step 2: Search for and select DePauw University.

 

You will be redirected to the NYT registration page.

 

Step 3: Click "Create Account". A new page may populate as displayed below. Click "Continue with Google" and complete the registration fields. You must use your @depauw.edu email address. (See below if you have an existing NYT account.)

Step 4: It may access for permissions to associate with your DePauw Google Account. Click "Continue".

 

Step 5: Verify your account (you will receive a confirmation email).* Once you have finished all steps you will get a confirmation page regarding your NYTimes Pass.

 

* The confirmation email may be routed to your spam folder. You must click the link in this email to complete the registration.

 

 

NOTE: New York Times may ask for additional information regarding your role at DePauw University. Click your appropriate status and any additional information such as graduation year and then click "Sign Up"

 

 

 

Existing New York Times Account

 

If you have previously registered your @depauw.edu email address on The New York Times site, you will click "Log in here" below the Create Account button link for Step 3.

 

Current Paid Subscription

Anyone with a paid account using their depauw.edu address who wants to switch over, must first deactivate their subscription.  That will "free up" the email address.

 

To cancel an existing PAID subscription, contact New York Times Customer Care at: customercare@nytimes.com or 800-591-9233

 

Once your email address is available, you may follow the steps above, but instead of clicking "Create Account" click the link below ("Already have an account?  Log in here") and login with your depauw.edu email address.

Does Include:

  • NYTimes App

  • Full daily NYT content

  • Archive (dating back to 1851)

  • Can access NYT VR experiences via the Youtube VR or within apps on the Oculus

    • Can also access Times 360 videos on TechRow, a subscription-based V.R system for classrooms

  • Daily 360 content - two dimensional, but provides 360° views (with mobile device or using a mouse)

  • Podcasts (including new "Daily" podcast via Spotify and Apple Music)

  • Video content

  • Newsletters (there are a variety of topics that you may subscribe to)

Does Not Include:

  • Premium crossword puzzle app (we know…boo!)

  • NYT Cooking App

  • Unlimited access to some historical articles (limit of 5 per day for access to articles dated 1923-1980)

 

Academic Passes need to be renewed annually from the date of initial registration.  You will not be notified that your access has expired, but if you are seeing a message about hitting your limit of "free articles" while viewing the The New York Times online, it's probably time to renew.  

Visit NYTimes.com to renew your account.  Log in with the DePauw email address and password you used during the initial registration.  Follow the on screen instructions to complete the process.    

You can also check what date your account is set to expire by visiting NYTimes.com when logged into your account.  It also provides an option to set a reminder to renew on your calendar.
