This guide will assist students enrolled in Dr. Balensuela's Mus 265: History of Western Music I class.

What is Discovery Search?

Discovery Search is the way to access the online catalog at DePauw University -- here you will be able to look at all of the physical resources as well as electronic resources available at the DePauw University Libraries.

Search Strategically

  • Do a quick scan for background information
  • Create a list of concepts and keywords relevant to your search topic
  • Group those concepts together or combine different concepts
  • Use terminology and facts learned from your background information
  • Look at the bibliographies of resources that you like
    • If you like their ideas, who inspired them?
  • Evaluate the sources you have found
    • Where is this information coming from?
    • Is it biased? Scholarly? Dated?

Narrowing Your Search

Its important to remember to narrow your search based off of your preliminary search results and to tailor your keywords off of the results you are finding.

By using Discovery Search you will be able to narrow down your research by:

  • Keywords
  • Subject
  • Title
  • Author
  • Location
  • Format
  • Language
