While Noah's memoir is packaged as a story about growing up in South Africa under Apartheid and the immediate aftermath, it's really a series of vignettes that serve as a "love letter" to his mother, Patricia. An intelligent woman, who is determined to knock down boundaries that she can, and craftily bypass the ones that she can't, she puts everything she has into two things: her Christian faith, and raising Trevor to be successful. To do that, she takes him to three church services every Sunday, teaches him to speak multiple languages, pushes him in his education, and refuses to let him feel like the racism they live with is going to define him. Trevor Noah's voice comes through loud and clear, and sometimes you find yourself laughing in the middle of his most tragic and scary stories.
