Refreshers

  • CSUDH has a great library guide to refresh yourself on source types
  • Always check if a database has a controlled vocabulary section. In EBSCO this is often called the "Subjects" section. In SciFinder-n this is called the Lexicon. Controlled vocabulary helps index similar topics together to improve discoverability. Sometimes you can find words to use in a search string you didn't think of prior. Another great tool is using an online thesaurus.
  • If you need more recent resources try using "Cited By" features in databases. These are often found along the sides of an article. Google Scholar in particular has a great "Cited By" feature, but so does SciFinder-n and ACS.
  • As you get into niche topics, you may find yourself hitting subscription or payment walls. We never want students to pay for literature. If you need a resource that DePauw doesn't subscribe to, try to place an Interlibrary Loan for that item. For digital resources delivery is relatively quick, but does depend on the loaning institution so NEVER wait until a day before your assignment is due to place a request. See ILL information below.

What is an Inter-Library Loan?
