Dr. Morris is an Associate Professor at Ohio State University in the Department of African American and African Studies. She will speak on February 7th at 7:00 in Watson Forum. Her timely talk is entitled, "Black Women's Civil Rights Activism: the Making of a Movement."
This presentation will examine the role of women and girls in the Civil Rights Movement. Challenging popular culture representations of female civil rights activists, it offers a transformative narrative of the Movement that centers women’s activism and demonstrates the importance of their work for the survival and progress of Black communities and of the Black freedom movement. Consistent with recent civil rights scholarship that focuses on the centrality of Black women’s activism and leadership, this presentation highlights some of the remarkable women and girls, who, as advocates for justice and equality, were integral to the Movement.
