ENG 197D: Writing Human, Writing Well (Ishikawa)

A guide for Prof. Ishikawa's Fall 2024 FYS, Writing Human, Writing Well

Your Assignment: AI Research Project

ENG 197D Fall 2024

Class Project Guidelines

The purpose of this assignment is to conduct a small qualitative research project in order to better understand AI use and writing on our campus at this moment in time. Together as a class we will formulate a research question, create a survey, conduct interviews, collect data, present our findings in the form of a collaborative digital story, and, if possible, present to a public audience. By investigating a meaningful issue – how faculty, staff, and students use (or do not use) generative AI tools in their daily lives – we will learn something about the research process and also create new knowledge.

Project Steps

  1. Meet with librarian Kayla Flegal to explore effective research tools and strategies

  2. Meet with Beth Wilkerson to learn about StoryMaps and see sample finished products

  3. Devise a research question to guide our study

  4. Create individual annotated bibliographies on the use of generative AI in writing

  5. Design a survey instrument and interview questions

  6. Distribute the survey across campus and conduct and record individual interviews, generating a transcript for each

  7. Analyze survey and interview data

  8. Reflect on our own experiences and learning in class this semester

  9. In pairs or small groups, create story maps to be embedded in larger story map

  10. Present our findings

You can see examples of StoryMaps here and here.

Additional instructions will be provided for individual components of the project.
