Basics of Archival Appraisal: Home

Session presented at the Society of Indiana Archivists Meeting Indianapolis, Indiana, April 5, 2008

Abstract

Abstract:
Determining what materials should enter the repository can be a daunting task.  Many factors must be considered such as the condition of the materials, historical value, the relationship to other materials in the collection, and the ability to care for particular items.   When the archivist makes the determination of what to save versus what to discard based on a sound collecting policy derived from the institutional mission for the repository, archival appraisal can become an interesting and less challenging part of the job, and result in a more coherent collection.
