Making It Work: EAD at Smaller Institutions: Home

Implementing EAD at a small college archives

Abstract

Abstract: Encoded Archival Description has been around in the Archives field for more than 10 years now, but most small and medium-sized archives have not yet adopted it. In most cases, the reason has to do with a lack of resources – time or money or both. Money is often lacking to out-source the conversion of finding aids to EAD and the archivist seldom has the time to learn all that is required to begin creating EAD finding aids. Partnering with library and other IT staff members can make the difference, however. At DePauw University, archives staff members have worked closely with the library’s technology coordinator and cataloger and as members of the digital library planning group to realize a breakthrough in EAD implementation using Archivists’ Toolkit.
