Reel-to-reel tape recordings are among the oldest of audio recording formats in archives. Equipment to play reel-to-reel tapes is often old or not operable and new equipment is expensive. At the same time, the recordings themselves may be fragile or deteriorating condition and prone to damage from repeated playing. These older recordings are often the only source for the information found on them such as visiting speakers, faculty and campus events. In order to preserve the information and make it available to the widest possible audience, digitization is desirable. DePauw University digitized its reel-to-reel tape recording collection. The original tape was retired, an archival digital master preserved (to be copied periodically) and an edited digital recording made available to researchers.
